Thanks to the journeys back and forth between Corvallis and Albany, it was getting late. Maya returned to her hotel room, working on the files, trying to find another way through all of this. The trouble was that she simply didn’t have enough information.

Maya felt certain that some point of connection between Jenette and Cynthia would be the answer to all of this, but she hadn’t been able to find one yet beyond Bob Wright. It made sense that someone who had gone to the clinic because of hearing damage sustained through working at the radio station might be the answer, but Bob simply didn’t have a good motive.

Just to be sure, Maya put in requests to have the cold cases unit take a closer look at his finances, just in case he’d been lying about the whole process being easy for him. Even so, Maya’s instinct was that they would come up with nothing.

Nothing wasn’t good enough, not if she wanted to save her sister’s life. Her sister and the nine other women still with her were relying on Maya to solve this, to get them away from a man so dangerous that just thinking about him made Maya shiver with fear.

Maya picked up her phone, looking for more texts from Marco in an effort to distract herself from thoughts of the Moonlight Killer. There was nothing new there, though, and Maya wasn’t sure what she should even text back at this point. She couldn’t help the feeling that she’d messed things up there, too, just like she was doing with this case. She guessed that she could call Marco, but after everything at the restaurant, she didn’t want to call him up just to sit talking about how hard the case was while he tried to be sympathetic. He deserved better than that.

She deserved a break in the case. There had to be something, but Maya couldn’t see it yet. She knew better than to hope for another clue from the Moonlight Killer too. She got the feeling that he was starting to lose patience with her. Maya would either solve this by the deadline, or a woman would die.

The thought that she might not solve it started to creep into Maya then. From the start of this, she’d been determined to find answers, and she’d assumed that the answers would be there to find, or why would the Moonlight Killer send her? Now… now the case had the feel of one of those cold cases that took weeks of careful grinding it down, talking to every contact both of the victims had, looking for that one glimmer of hope.

Maya didn’t have weeks, though, and as she started to settle in to sleep, her hope was running pretty thin too.
